Lot description - from the online catalogue*
Provenance:
Inuit Graphics and Carvings, Waddington's Auctioneers and Appraisers, November 27, 1991, lot 1358
Private Collection, Toronto
Notes:
Mother and Child is a beautifully moving example of one of John Tiktak’s favourite themes, capturing the essence of maternal care with remarkable skill. The sculpture depicts a mother carrying her child in an amautiq - a traditional Inuit parka with an enlarged hood designed to cradle and protect a child from the harsh Arctic climate. Tiktak's smooth, rounded forms convey a sense of warmth and security, while his use of negative space defines the figures: two circular openings at the mother's sides represent her arms, and a larger hole at the back sugests the shape of the amautiq. Art historian George Swinton famously compared Tiktak's work to that of British sculptor Henry Moore, and the interplay of positive and negative space in this piece is a testament to that connection.
