William Maltman was born in South Shields, England, in 1901 and came to Canada in 1914, settling in Winnipeg, Manitoba. There, he apprenticed in the art department at Stovel's Printing and studied at the Winnipeg School of Art. He later worked as a commercial artist at Brigden's Designers and Engravers (Winnipeg). He later studied at the Chicago Art Institute and continues as a commercial artist in New York City and Toronto. William Maltman moved to Victoria, British Columbia, in 1969, and died in Victoria in 1971.
