William G. Hobbs was born in Alderney, Channel Islands, in 1927. Despite demonstrating talent as an artists, Hobbs graduated from Bristol University as a general practitioner in medicine in 1950. In 1959 he emigrated to Canada and settled in Gainsborough, Saskatchewan, becoming a respected physician and surgeon in Southeast Saskatchewan. During his medical career he continued to paint and to study, attending the Banff School of Fine Arts and the Emma Lake workshops hosted by University of Saskatchewan. Hobbs is particularly renowned for his paintings of prairie train stations, which have been widely exhibited, published and collected by public institutions. William Hobbs died in Brandon, Manitoba in 2012.
