Collection of the artist, in Canada since 1857 when this lot was executed. Thence the collection travelled to Edinburgh, Scotland when Napier left Canada in 1870, remaining in Edinburgh until his death in 1894.

William Henry Edward Napier was born in Quebec, Canada in 1829. He was the son of Duncan Campbell Napier, the personal secretary to Lord Elgin. In 1857, Napier acted as Chief Engineer on the Canadian Government Exploring Expedition with Henry Youle Hind (the older brother of Canadian artist W.G.R. Hind whose works are also included in this Private Collection of historic watercolours, see lots: ******).
Henry Youle Hind (1823-1908) wrote: Explorations in the interior of the Labrador Peninsula : The Country of the Montagnais and Nasquapee Indians, published by Longman, Green, Longman, Roberts & Green, London in 1863.
