Notes:
Walasse Ting was an American-Chinese artist known for his brightly colored paintings of cats, erotic nudes, and flowers. He was born Ding Xiongquan on October 13, 1929 in Wuxi, China, and though largely self-taught, Ting briefly attended the Art Academy in Shanghai. Moving to Paris in 1952, he made the acquaintance of many of the members of the CoBrA movement, with its philosophy of complete freedom of colour and form, namely Karel Appel, Pierre Alechinsky, and Asger Jorn. Some years later Ting moved to New York where immersed himself in the art scene, befriending Sam Francis and associating with practitioners of Abstract Expressionism. During this period, he began to include the bold strokes of traditional Chinese calligraphy into his work. His works are held in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, among many others.
