VITAL MAKPAAQ (1922-1978)
BAKER LAKE, Muskox, ca. 1975
Black stone, 3.25 x 5.25 x 2.25 in, 8.3 x 13.3 x 5.7 cm
For a very similar work by this artist, see Ingo Hessel, Arctic Spirit: Inuit Art from the Albrecht Collection at the Heard Museum, 2006, cat. ill. #87. The caption reads: "The remarkable feature of this sculpture is the textural treatment of the animal's trademark shaggy coat. This was probably achieved through many hundreds of small cross-hatched blows with a small hatchet; the rough surface was then lightly sanded and polished to produce the shimmering texture."
Most realised prices include the Buyer's Premium of 18-25%, but not the HST/GST Tax.
