ARTIST STATEMENT

My inspiration for Untitled derived from my need to combine abstract techniques (form, line, absence of imagery) and aesthetic design to create a piece which embodies both chaos and order. To an extent, my piece represents the idea of a city: where negative space meets the pattern represents a skyline, and the disorderly yet structured design acts as the city above (the buildings and urban spaces) and below (the streets and people).

Instead of using paint to convey a visual message, I took pleasure in discovering its visual strengths through the process of creating it. Absent traditional painting techniques, Untitled was created under the impression that it would be as intuitive and instinctive as possible. The print which was built up by continuously repeating the pattern upon itself (just like the layers of structures and people living in the city), each layer determines and guides the next, interlocking with the previous one to create a new innovative design. Developing a pattern became the only element which was carefully taken into consideration. Inspired by Jackson Pollock's painting Autumn Rhythm, I've also utilized dripping and pouring, and some painting techniques to create the pattern. Rather than trying to force inspiration, the medium had complete and total control.

Untitled with its upward sprawl and condensed area below, truly exemplifies the idea of a city.
