Lot description - from the online catalogue*

Provenance:
Private Collection, Ontario
Notes:
Tyler Bright Hilton is a Canadian artist whose work delves into themes of identity, perception, and psychological complexity. Central to his practice is the fictional protagonist Minmei Madelynne Pryor, a character navigating a surreal coming-of-age narrative that intertwines elements of fantasy and psychological introspection.

Here, the central image is drawn from a scene in Gus Van Sant's 1991 film "My Own Private Idaho," featuring actor River Phoenix as Mike Waters, a narcoleptic bisexual sex worker on a quest to find his birth mother. In the scene depicted here, we see Mike seated in an unseen chair in the throes of his "date" with one of his clients. The film’s daring depictions of sexuality and Phoenix's angry, vulnerable, and deeply felt performance have made it an irreplaceable part of Queer cinema history.

Consignor proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, with significant donations also being made to the Canadian Opera Company, the Glenbow Museum, the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, and the Pelee Island Bird Observatory.
Most realised prices include the Buyer's Premium of 18-25%, but not the HST/GST Tax.
