Tsuchiya Koitsu was born in Shizuoka, Japan in 1870. He trained with ukiyo-e master Kobayashi Kiyochika for 19 years. His early work often focused on the first Sino-Japanese War, while later works emphasized light effects, shadows and atmosphere. Tsuchiya Koitsu died in 1949 in Kanagawa, Japan.
