Notes:
Disaster radiates from Susanna Heller's work. Chronicling her reactions to shocks such as witnessing the events of 9/11 while living in New York, and the loss of her husband's leg to disease, her work is not weighed down but upheld by the gravity of its subject matter. Expressive use of paint and colour produce deeply introspective analyses of trauma, grit and movement working together to bring a tangible presence to phantom pain.

In Red Sky At Morn, a pallid sun radiates from the centre of the painting, throwing a searing wash of red across the right of the image that refracts into blistering yellows and whites. To the left, a roiling blue mass that could be the sea arcs across the canvas in a huge wave. The presaged violence of the ocean seems to have already arrived: the surface is broken by sprays of black and yellows, throwing sea foam in great white gobs, while the florid sun is reflected and absorbed into the liquid catastrophe. It is difficult to read a safe harbour, but the painting is regimented by black squiggles and columns - the dripping architectures of a ship, maybe, or the rippled reflections of the rising sun in a wake. Red Sky is compelling in that it records catastrophe yet to come, the promise of calamity rather than its fallout; narrative time is compressed in the canvas, becoming a twisted spatial density that threatens to spill out of the sides in a rush of noise and colour. Heller creates beautiful disaster pieces, emphatically interrupting the stability of the canvas with a crash and a bang while remaining rooted in an interior vision.
Most realised prices include the Buyer's Premium of 18-25%, but not the HST/GST Tax.
