Notes:
Steven Gibb was born in Brooks, Alberta in 1948 and raised in nearby Rosemary. He studied journalism at Mount Royal College (Calgary) and began his career as a photographer and reporter at the Swift Current Sun (Swift Current, Saskatchewan). He then worked for 35 years at the Saskatoon StarPhoenix, including a 1y-year tenure as editor-in-chief. After retiring in 2010, Gibb turned his attention to two longtime personal interests, painting and photography. Gibb painted mostly in acrylics on canvas but also utilized a self-developed, labour-intensive style where many elements are hand-drawn on other media before being hand-cut, affixed to the canvas, carefully sanded and then painted. Although time consuming, the process gives the paintings an added interesting three-dimensional quality. He also explored photography involving digitally manipulating elements of the image, particularly the colours, shadows and exposure. Steven Gibb died in August 2021, in Saskatoon.
