Elected A.R.A. in 1809 and R.A. in 1811, Wilkie was appointed the King's Limner for Scotland in 1823 and painter in ordinary to the king in 1830. The painting for which this sketch is prepared, "The Penny Wedding, 1818", is in the queen's collection.
