Simon Shegelman is a world renowned artist, currently residing in Toronto, ON. He was born in 1933 in Bobruisk, Belarus. in the fifties he moved to Riga to his older sister and there entered the Academy of Arts, graphic arts department. In 1958 he graduated from the Academy and in 1959 he became a member of the Artists' Union of Latvia. Exhibitions of his work include: Riga, 1975. Riga, 1995, 2003, 2010 (Guntis Belevics collection), Jurmala, 1990; Italy, 1976; Rome, 1976, 1993; Sorento, 1994; Canada, 1976, 1979; Monreal, 1976, 1981, 1982; Ottava, 1986; Toronto, 1990; New York, 1979; Los Angeles, 1990; London, 1993; Berlin, 1998. Simon Shegelman decided to emigrate with his family from the USSR in 1975 after his exhibition in Riga was shut down in Riga after 10 days Because the pieces were 'too gloomy'.
