SILAS QIYUK (1933-)

BAKER LAKE, Swimming Birds, ca. late 1960s,

Grey stone, 4.75 x 7 x 7.25 in, 11.1 x 17.8 x 18.4 cm

Signed "Salis KEYOU"

For similar "swimming bird" works by Silas (not Miriam) Qiyuk, see Jean Blodgett, The Zazelenchuk Collection of Eskimo Art (WAG, 1978), cat. nos. 33-34. Silas Qiyuk is less well known than his wife Miriam, but he has carved at least as long as she has. Like many artistic Inuit couples they work alongside each other, have similar styles, and often explore similar themes, so it is difficult to know which of them came up with one idea or another first. Certainly this group of birds by Silas is every bit as lovely as any by Miriam.
Most realised prices include the Buyer's Premium of 18-25%, but not the HST/GST Tax.
