Notes:
Shary Boyle’s multidisciplinary practice explores the slippages that occur between imagination, perspectivity, and social history, and is almost always located in depictions of the figure. In mediums such as porcelain sculpture, installation, drawing, and painting, Boyle creates surrealistic worlds that are at once whimsical and slightly creepy, and seem to be set in the heady locales of enchanted forests or vaudeville circuses. Throughout, the figures she depicts are marginalized creatures that seem to be taken from folk myths and fairy tales: busted cartoons and toy dolls, lonely-girl monsters and sad-sack clowns. Baroque, imaginative, and darkly cosmic, her works provoke an excited bewilderment as they open up fissures of beauty and strangeness.
