Notes:
Sharni Pootoogook was born in Cape Dorset (Kinngait) in 1922. She worked primarily in printmaking, and was involved with the West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative. She comes from an artistic family: Her brother was sculptor Pauta Saila; she was married to carver and graphic artist Pudlat Pootoogook; her daughter is printmaker Sarah Putuguk; her adopted son Elijah Pootoogook is a graphic artist and carver; and she was sister-in-law to artist Kananingak Pootoogook. Her work is characterized by soft colours and strong lines. Her art is collected in many museums and galleries, including the British Museum, The Canadian Museum of History, the National Gallery of Canada, the Royal Ontario Museum, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
