Lot description - from the online catalogue*

Sarah Jackson (nee Sherman) was born in Detroit in 1924. She studied sculpture and received a BA from the University of London in 1946. In 1948 she received Masters degree in Humanities from Wayne University in Detroit, with her thesis paper being on colour and texture in primitive and modern sculpture. After marrying architect Anthony Jackson, the couple lived in London, where her first solo show took place at the Galerie Apollinaire in 1951. In 1956 the couple moved to Canada. Jackson was appointed artist-in-residence at Dalhousie University in 1978 and taught art and technology classes. Jackson's later work often involved explorations of various media including mail art, copier art, and artist's books; she was also among the first artists to explore computer arts. Sarah Jackson exhibited widely in both solo and group shows in Europe, the United States and Canada. Her work can be found in many collections both private and public, including the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), the Musee National des Beaux-arts du Quebec (Quebec City, QC), the Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington, D.C.) and the National Gallery of Canada.
