Rusty Peters was born in Barlinyin (Springvale), Australia in 1934. He worked as a stockman for many years, but eventually moved to Turkey Creek to help a group of Gija artists start a school teaching traditional ways, the Gija language and traditional art making. In 1989 Peters moved to Kununurra to work at Waringarri Aboriginal Arts gropu, then in 1997 to Crocodile Hole to join artist Freddie Timms at the Jirrawun Aboriginal Arts group. There he began working with larger canvasses while still using charcoal and red and yellow ochres. Rusty Peters work has been widely exhibited across Australia and internationally, and can be found in the permanent collections of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, National Gallery of Australia, University of Melbourne, and Australia Artbank, among many others. Rusty Peters died in July 2020, in Kununurra, Western Australia.
