Roberto Matta was born in 1911 in Santiago, Chile in 1911. He studied architect but in 1933 he moved to Paris to join its modernist and surrealist artistic movements. Matta emigrated to the United States in 1938, where he stayed for the next ten years. He then lived between Europe and Chile, where he was a staunch supporter of the country's socialist movements. Roberto Matta died in 2002 in Civitavecchia, Italy.
