Robert Reginald Staley was born in 1924 in Regina, Saskatchewan. He enlisted in the army in 1943 and served in Normandy and Belgium. He was wounded in battle, but upon his release from hospital he joined the Canadian Scottish Regiment and was part of the liberation of Holland in 1944. After the war, Staley completed an art degree at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver) and and art degree at the University of Calgary. He focused on painting and silkscreen printing, and his work was exhibited across Western Canada, while he continued an accomplished career as an art teacher in schools. Robert Staley died in 2004 in High River, Alberta.
