Collection of Mr. John Nanton Clark, by descent from his mother and step-father, Percy Humphrey, who reportedly acquired the painting in trade for a violin;

Estate of John Nanton Clark, ON

Exhibitions:
Münchener Jahresausstellung, 1902, exhibition label verso inscribed painted by "Duddingstone Herdman" and titled 'Oelgemälde' ('The Love Letter') with the artist's address: '13 Bruntsfield Crescent, Edinburgh' in pen and ink to label verso; and another label for this exhibition, numbered Cat. "No. 285" to the side of the frame verso;

Inscribed "Society of Scottish Artists, Edinburgh" to a second handwritten exhibition label for the Münchener Jahresausstellung, 1902 exhibition.
