On retrouve au dos de l’œuvre, sur un morceau de papier cartonné, puis agrafé sur le châssis, un commentaire dactylographié par le galeriste Yvon Lambert concernant le tableau Assassinat à Paris (1990) de Robert Combas. Afin de contextualiser ce court texte, notons que la toile est signée « Combas » et datée du « 20 octobre 1990 » au dos, par l’artiste [nous corrigeons] : « Tous les ans à Paris des personnes se font assassiner dans la rue ou bien devant leur domicile. Il s’agit souvent de crimes politiques étrangers, car ces gens sont souvent des politiciens en exil ayant eu des problèmes avec le gouvernement de leur pays. Ainsi, il y a trois mois, un avocat algérien opposé au régime s’est fait assassiner d’un coup de pistolet dans la tête dans les escaliers, devant la porte de son appartement. Souvent, le début d’un scandale éclate, puis on n’en parle plus. Chaque année, on compte deux ou trois de ces assassinats. »

Robert Combas naît à Lyon en 1957 et grandit à Sète. Il étudie les beaux-arts à Montpellier de 1974 à 1979. Dès les années 1980, les expositions individuelles et collectives se succèdent; rapidement, son œuvre acquiert une réputation enviable qui le propulse sur la scène internationale, notamment à Amsterdam, à Düsseldorf, à New York, à Paris, à Séoul et à Venise. Figure de proue du mouvement de la figuration libre, Combas explore de nombreuses techniques, privilégiant une approche interdisciplinaire, étant à la fois épris de liberté et de formes d’expression marginalisées telles que l’art brut, la bande dessinée et la publicité. Caractérisé par des couleurs vives et un trait noir délimitant les figures représentées, le « style Combas » se veut libre, spontané et décadent.

A note by gallerist Yvon Lambert, typewritten on a piece of thin cardboard, has been stapled to the stretcher on the back of Robert Combas’s Assassinat à Paris (1990). The back of the painting is also signed “Combas” and dated “20 octobre 1990.” The note provides context for the work: “Every year some people get murdered in Paris in the street or in front of their residences. Often, these crimes are committed for foreign political reasons. These are often exiled politicians who had problems with the government of their country. Thus, 3 months ago an Algerian lawyer opposing the regime was killed in the staircase in front of the door of his apartment. Often, it is beginning of a scandal, and then, one doesn't talk about it any more. Each year there are 2 or 3.”

Robert Combas was born in Lyon in 1957 and grew up in Sète. He studied fine arts at Montpellier from 1974 to 1979, and in the 1980s he had a quick succession of solo and group exhibitions. Combas soon gained an enviable reputation that propelled him onto the international stage, most notably in Amsterdam, Düsseldorf, New York, Paris, Seoul, and Venice. As a leader of the figuration libre movement in France (known as Neo-expressionism in North America and parts of Europe), Combas experimented with a number of techniques, adopting an interdisciplinary approach inspired by his fascination with free exploration and marginalized forms of expression such as Art Brut, comic books, and advertising. Characterized by bright colours and black outlines, Combas’s style is free-spirited, spontaneous, and nonconformist.
