ABOUT THE ARTIST
Richard "Rick" Burns (1949–2004) was a Canadian multidisciplinary artist, writer, and educator whose work significantly shaped the cultural landscape of New Brunswick. Born in Middleton, Nova Scotia, he studied at the University of New Brunswick, where he began his career as a writer of short stories and radio plays, including The Garden, produced for CBC Radio and the UNB Drama Society.
In the mid-1970s, Burns turned to visual art following an apprenticeship with sculptor Rosemary James Cross. His practice encompassed painting, sculpture, and mixed media, often engaging with materiality and spatial memory. He held his first solo exhibition in 1980, with a major retrospective organized by the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in 1992. His work is represented in significant public collections, including the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, the Canada Council Art Bank, and the New Brunswick Museum.
Burns worked in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, collage, sculpture and installation, exploring deeply psychological themes about human existence and experiences.
Burns received multiple honours, including Canada Council and New Brunswick Arts Branch grants, and the Strathbutler Award. A founding member of Gallery Connexion, he was instrumental in the development of Fredericton’s contemporary art scene. He taught at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design and served on the New Brunswick Arts Board and its Cultural Task Force, contributing to provincial cultural policy.
