ARTIST STATEMENT
I chose the koi fish as my subject matter because it represents a sense of tranquility, and I wanted to portray that peace through the painting. The koi is a translated Japanese word which simply means carp in English. It was said to have been a cross hybrid from a variety of different carp breeds. The koi has a symbolic meaning of peace and fortune in Japanese culture. The lotus flower symbolises happiness. Similar to the koi, the lotus shares the same symbolic meaning of good luck and fortune.
For the choice of the medium, I was influenced by Rauschenberg's contemporary materials, used in his art. One of it was plexiglass. I wanted to explore and experiment with the painterly quality of the oil on the surface of the smooth plexiglass. After all, the plexiglass gives depth to the cloth's creases to represent the ripples of the water in the pond. I did this because I want people to view the fishes as if they are looking at an actual pond or lake.
Most realised prices include the Buyer's Premium of 18-25%, but not the HST/GST Tax.
