Lot description - from the online catalogue*
Provenance:
La Galeria de Arte Mexicano, Mexico City
Private Collection, Toronto
Notes:
Accompanying this work is a certificate from La Galeria de Arte Mexicano, stamped and dated December 1st, 1946 and signed by Inés Amor, Director.
Founded in 1935 by Amor and her sister Carolina, La Galeria de Arte Mexicano was the first gallery promoting contemporary artists to be established in Mexico City. It represented the work of artists like Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Rufino Tamayo and Frida Kahlo, among many others. The gallery, now known as GAM is directed by Inés's daughter, Mariana Pérez Amor and Alejandra R. de Yturbe.
It is not precisely known how this painting came to be in Toronto, but based on the date of the certificate, it was likely purchased by a visitor to Mexico around 1948. The stretcher bears the framer's (W. Haines at 899 Yonge Street) pencilled inscription: "Miss McGough 1 Warwick Avenue" - along with his notations about the molding choice.
