Lot description - from the online catalogue*
Provenance:
Private Collection, Montreal
Notes:
Gagnon is an Israeli born artist, but has lived in Canada since 1960. Burnt Trees No. 1 and No. 2 are part of a series painted in Israel, after a fire that destroyed a part of the forest on Mount Carmel near Haifa, where she stays when in Israel. Forests are fragile eco-systems, especially in the Middle East, and most of Gagnon's recent art is concerned with ecology. The two watercolors in this sale are on hand made paper, but with an element of collage of thin layers of wood. They communicate vividly both the power of the fire and the forms of the tree trunks and branches, with an intensity of colour which derives from her Mediterranean origins.
Please note: this work is unframed.
