Notes:
Philip Connard was born in Southport, Meresyside. He worked as a house painter but studied art in his spare time before winning a scholarship to the RCA. He further developed his style in Paris from 1898 before returning to London to teach at the Lambeth School of Art. It was during this time he received a number of notable commissions, including a large panel for the HMS Queen Mary and murals for Windsor castle. He was elected to the RA in 1925 and was appointed the Keeper of the Academy, a position he held through the end of the 1940s.

Miss Mimpriss, shown here in an elaborate costume, was a favourite subject of Connard and he painted her portrait on at least five occasions. In 1923, she married and her name changed to Mrs. Benge. This work is similar to Connard's "Portrait of Mrs. Benge" exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1923.

The painting is retained in Connard's original handcarved frame.
