Peteroosie Kakee
Pangnirtung
Tree, ca. 1972-73, antler and ivory on a caribou skull base, 14.25 x 13 x 4 in, 36.2 x 33 x 10.2 cm
Pangnirtung was known as a centre of ivory carving already in the 1930s and 1940s, and even earlier, during the time of the whalers. This tradition continued to some extent, even as more "modern" media (stone and whale bone sculpture, tapestries and prints) were introduced. Kakee's delicate construction is unusual but not unique for an Inuit sculptor. See Swinton, Sculpture of the Inuit, fig. 171 for a startlingly similar tree created ca. 1900, and Hessel, Arctic Spirit, D&M/Heard Museum, 2006, p. 66-67 for contemporaneous and recent examples that depict Arctic plants.
Most realised prices include the Buyer's Premium of 18-25%, but not the HST/GST Tax.
