PETER TUKAI (1921-1976)
INUKJUAK, Otter with Fish, early-mid 1950s
Black stone and ivory
2.75 x 10 x 2.5 in., 7.0 x 25.4 x 6.4 cm
Signed "PETER TUKI P.H. [Port Harrison]"
This quite early example of a popular animal subject in Nunavik (Arctic Quebec) art relies less on naturalistic detail and more on sensuously fluid sculptural form to capture the essence of the otter. In contrast, the ivory fish is much more realistic; perhaps Tukai still had more experience carving ivory at this stage in his career.
Most realised prices include the Buyer's Premium of 18-25%, but not the HST/GST Tax.
