SKNAC bio: Peggy Smith was born in 1935 in Prince Edward Island. She studied fine art at Mount Allison University, in New Brunswick, instructed by Lawren Harris and Alex Colville, graduating in 1955 and majoring in portrait and landscape painting. She then moved to Toronto, Ontario, where she was a founding member of the Society of Co-operating Artists. After some time in the United Kingdom and Prince Edward Island, Smith moved to Saint John, New Brunswick, where she was continued her art making, exhibiting in group and solo exhibitions since the late 1960s. Smith's work includes landscape, still-life and portraiture, especially of musicians, as Smith's love of music has connected her to the Saint John String Quartet and Symphony New Brunswick, whose rehearsals and concerts are frequent subjects. Peggy Smith's work has been exhibited widely across Canada, including New Brunswick Museum (Saint John), Winnipeg Art Gallery, 1st Street Gallery (Vancouver) and Beaverbrook Art Gallery (Fredericton). It can also be found in the permanent collections of The Canada Council, New Brunswick Museum, Mount Allison University and the New Brunswick Cultural Resources Art Bank. Peggy Smith continues to live and work in Saint John, New Brunswick.
