Paul Mathieson (b. 1949, England) is a contemporary Canadian visual artist and educator based in New Brunswick. After earning a BA (Hons) from the University of Nottingham and an MA from the University of London, he immigrated to Canada in 1975, where he taught art until 2006. Mathieson’s figurative paintings are often cheeky social commentaries, exploring the complexities, contradictions, and ironies of urban life and the contemporary human condition. His work is held in major public collections, including the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, the New Brunswick Museum, and the Canada Council Art Bank. In 2015, he received the Strathbutler Award for excellence in visual arts in New Brunswick.
