Patrick Nagel was born in 1945 in Dayton, Ohio, but grew up and spent most of his life in Los Angeles, California. After serving in the army, Nagel attended the Chouinart Art Institute (Los Angeles) and received a BFA from California State University (Fullerton) in 1969. He immediately started working as a graphic designer and a freelance artist for magazines such as Harper's Magazine, Rolling Stone and Oui, and produced album covers for recoding artists including the iconic Rio album for Duran Duran. Nagel began contributing to Playboy magazine in 1975, with one of his images used in every issue for a ten year stretch. Patrick Nagel died of a heart attack in 1984, in Santa Monica, California.
