Patrick Hayman was a British artist associated with the St Ives School of painters and sculptors, including Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth, Terry Frost and others, who emerged in Cornwall in the 1940s to the 1960s. Patrick Hayman was born in London in 1915, but moved to New Zealand in 1936 at the age of nineteen and studied art at the King Edward Technical College in Dunedin and Victoria University in Wellington. He returned to England in 1947 and became part of the innovative art scene in Cornwall following the war. From 1958 to 1963 he was editor of the quarterly magazine The Painter and Sculptor, and during the 1960s he taught at the Falmouth School of Art and the Croydon School of Art. Hayman worked in drawing, painting, three-dimensional art, and poetry, often with aspects of symbolism and allegory. Solo exhibitions include Whitechapel Art Gallery (London), Belgrave Gallery (London), Royal Albert Memorial Museum (Bath) Victoria Art Gallery (Wakefield), The South Bank Centre (London), Gallery Legard (Wellington, New Zealand), University of Saskatchewan (Saskatoon), Mackenzie Art Gallery (Regina) and Mendel Art Gallery (Saskatoon). His work can be found in the permanent collections of Tate Gallery (London), Arts Council of Great Britain, Contemporary Art Society (London), National Gallery of Art (Edinburgh), Glasgow University, Art Gallery of Ontario, Winnipeg Art Gallery, Mackenzie Art Gallery (Regina), National Art Gallery of New Zealand, Milwaukee Art Museum, and National Gallery of South Australia, among many others. Patrick Hayman died in London in 1988.
