Nuveeya Ipellie (1920-2010)
Iqaluit (Frobisher Bay)
Mother breastfeeding her child, 1969, whale bone, 10 x 6 x 5.5 in, 25.4 x 15.2 x 14 cm
Nuveeya was born in Nunavik (Arctic Quebec), the son of the famous artist Ennutsiak. The family migrated by umiak to Cape Dorset, then to Pangnirtung, and finally settled some distance from Iqaluit. For decades Nuveeya was his father's right-hand man, living a very traditional life on the land as long as he felt he could. Like Henry Evaluardjuk, Nuveeya eventually fell into the trap of stereotypical art - in his case, musk-oxen. However he created some magnificent singular works as well, such as this one.
Most realised prices include the Buyer's Premium of 18-25%, but not the HST/GST Tax.
