Notes:
Nora Collyer was a key member of The Beaver Hall Group, the first Canadian artists association in which women played a leading role. Born into a prominent English Protestant family in Montreal, Collyer was a student of Maurice Cullen and a teacher at the Art Association of Montreal.

In her book The Women of Beaver Hall: Canadian Modernist Painters, Evelyn Walters writes of Collyer: "Her technique is never harsh, and is remarkable for its shapes, rich colour, and soft rhythms."

Collyer had a summer home near Lake Memphremagog in the Eastern Townships and it was in this area where she painted her best landscapes. She often made a farm or a church the focal point of her composition.

In this masterful work, the eye is drawn to the pink farmhouse and then gently back down the undulating road, to the ploughing team resting following the day's work, at the bridge.

On verso of this painting is a painted sketch, Montreal Square with Fountain.
