MIRIAM NANURLUK QIYUK (1933-)

BAKER LAKE, Umiak Migration

ca 1990-95, black stone

5.75 x 15 x 3.875 in, 14.6 x 38.1 x 9.8 cm

It is interesting to compare this work to two other important and relatively large-scale works by this artist: "Women and Children" from 1990 in the Winnipeg Art Gallery (see Winnipeg Art Gallery: Guide to the Collections, 2010, p. 244); and "Family" from 1980 (see Kramer and Shafer ed., Of the People: Inuit Sculpture from the Collection of Mary and Fred Widding, Handwerker Gallery, Ithaca College, 2008, p. 28). Specific subject matter may differ but each work conveys a sense of community, and they are all three carved in a frieze-like bas-relief style.
Most realised prices include the Buyer's Premium of 18-25%, but not the HST/GST Tax.
