Saskatchewan NAC bio: Michaela Hoppe (ne McBee) was born in 1985 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She began painting in high school with the encouragement of her art teacher, and later studied painting, drawing, and art history at the University of Saskatchewan (2003-2006). Hoppe initially painted in oils, but switched to acrylics while taking classes at the University of Saskatchewan. Recently, Hoppe has returned to oils. Her current primary focus is figure painting, though she also paints landscape and abstract works. Hoppe writes, "I am so happy with where my art is going. Figure painting is an undeniable love. Sometimes I paint a landscape if I feel compelled. I paint my subjects in the style and medium I feel that they demand." Hoppe's work can be found in the collection of the Biggar Museum and Gallery, in Biggar, Saskatchewan. Hoppe is a past artistic director of the Biggar Museum and Gallery, and in 2006, she organized an exhibition called 'Secrets of A Social Club: The Ku Klux Klan in Rural Saskatchewan', which illuminated the influence of the KKK on Biggar in the 1920s and the town's eventual recovery. Michaela Hoppe is a member of the Saskatchewan Craft Council, and lives in Biggar, Saskatchewan.
