Milford (Mel) Hunter was born in Oak Park, Illinois, in 1927. He studied at Northwestern University (Evanston) and then works as a draftsman. In the 1950s Hunter moved to New York and developed his own illustration style and began providing illustrations to magazines, especially science fiction magazines and books. In 1967 Hunter shifted careers again, moving Chester, Vermont, and focusing on lithographic printmaking, including the development of new techniques. Mel Hunter died in 2004 in Ferrisburgh, Vermont.
