Maynard Reece was born in 1920 in Arnolds Park, Iowa. As a young man he moved to Des Moines and worked as an artist for the Department of History and Archives, then worked as a graphic artist for Meredith Corp. His own work focused on fish and waterfowl, and his paintings were featured in many major magazines such as Life, Sports Illustrated and the Saturday Evening Post. Maynard Reece died in Des Moines in 2020, at the age of 100.
