Three Women Dancers

Martin Barooshian was borin in 1929 in Chelsea, Massachusetts, of Armenian background. He studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston) before studying printmaking in Paris, where he was much influence by the etching and engraving studio Atelier 17. Barooshian later completed an MA in Art History at Boston University. His printmaking met with immediate success, with the Library of Congress acquiring a complete portfolio of his early woodcuts when he was just 22 years old. This was followed by his first solo show, at Childs Gallery (Boston). One print style he mastered was colour viscosity etching, with critic Malcolm Preston describing Barooshian's viscosity etchings as "heavily etched surfaces which produce bold relief and strong textural areas, along with an interesting use of colour." Barooshian's work can be found in many important collections including Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, National Gallery of Art (Washington), Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) and the Museum of Modern Art (New York).
