Marmaduke Matthews was born in Warwickshire, England in 1837. He studied watercolour painting at Oxford University before moving to Toronto in 1860 and embarking on a career as an painter of Canadian landscapes. He was hired by the Canadian Pacific Railway to paint the Canadian prairies and rocky mountains and made several cross-country trips, especially in the 1880s. Matthews is also notable for playing a founding role in the Ontario Society of Artists and the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts as a watercolour painter. His work can be found in the Art Gallery of Ontario, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, and the National Gallery of Canada, among many other public collections.
