Marie Hélène Allain (Canadian, b. 1939) is a contemporary sculptor known for her exploration of spiritual and symbolic themes through stone. Born in Sainte-Marie-de-Kent, New Brunswick, she joined the Sisters of Notre-Dame du Sacré-Cœur in 1958. With institutional support, she pursued formal studies in the visual arts, earning a BA from Université de Moncton in 1966 and a BFA in sculpture from Université du Québec à Montréal in 1971.
Her largely abstract sculptural works integrate stone with materials such as wood and metal, addressing themes of transformation and metaphysical inquiry. She has participated in over fifty exhibitions, including more than twenty solo shows across North America and Europe. Major commissions include permanent installations at Market Square, Saint John, and the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Fredericton.
Allain’s contributions have been recognized with numerous distinctions, including the Strathbutler Award (1996) and the Lieutenant-Governor’s Award for High Achievement in the Arts (2019). In 2018, the Société culturelle Kent-Sud established the Marie Hélène Allain Gallery in Bouctouche in her name. Her work is represented in the collections of the Canada Council Art Bank, the New Brunswick Museum, and the Université de Moncton.
