Provenance:
Private Collection, Toronto
Notes:
By the 1890s, the Thomson family of Claremont, Ontario, was nurturing a love of the arts among their ten children. From this creative, but otherwise unassuming household, emerged Canada’s most iconic painter: Tom Thomson.

His sister Margaret, the ninth child, shared in the family’s artistic spirit. A teacher in Toronto, she lived in a home decorated with Tom’s work and took up painting seriously only after his untimely death in 1917. Unsurprisingly, the loss devastated the family – but also drew them closer. In the 1920s, Margaret and her brother George began going on painting trips around Ontario. No doubt with the memory of Tom in mind, their trips – outdoors in all weather – embraced the same rugged dedication that would define his legacy.

Though Margaret was reluctant to sell her work, she pursued painting determinedly for the rest of her life. Fiercely protective of her brother’s legacy, and a supporter of her entire family’s artistic pursuits, Margaret was also an artist in her own right. When she passed in 1979, she was the last surviving Thomson sibling.
