The artist Henry Mayo Bateman, particularly well-known for his humorous cartoons which appeared in Punch, was a friend and colleague of Lucien Pissarro and this painting was acquired directly from Pissarro by Bateman.
This painting was produced while Pissarro was staying with Miss Baker Jones at Brynfield in the village of Reynoldston on the Gower peninsula in Wales between August 24 and early October of 1933. It is one of five pictures painted on this expedition; another, titled Cefn Bryn, is in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
