Birge Harrison was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and studied at the Academy of Fine Art, Philadelphia and L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris. Harrison spent his winters in Quebec City from 1907 and his summers in the American Southwest. He was know as the “Painter of the Snows” which is evident in his painting of The Ice Harvest with its luminous chrome yellow sunset. Piled on the St. Lawrence’s surface are great cakes of freshly cut ice that are full of iridescent colours. His work was exhibited at the Royal Canadian Academy exhibition in 1904.
