Lot description - from the online catalogue*
Provenance:
Lehman Maupin, New York
Private Collection / Collection Particulière
Richard Levy Gallery, Alburqueque
Private Collection / Collection Particulière
Notes:
Framed, minimally time-stained / Encadrée, légèrement décoloré par le temps
Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010) was an eminent French-American artist of the 20th century, recognized for her abstract sculptures, drawings and prints, and perhaps best known for her arachnid-like “Maman” figures. The artist’s brooding works were culled from childhood memories as well as psychological analyses of sexuality, pain, and fear. In her “Mosquito” drawing, Bourgeois uses a warm red line to addresses her complex ideas in a minimal manner; successfully morphing female human and mosquito body parts in an evocative metaphor for motherhood and femininity Today, Bourgeois’ works are held in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, and the Kunstmuseum Basel, among others.
