Llewellyn Petley-Jones was born in Edmonton, Alberta, in 1908. As a child he demonstrated ability as an artist, and by 1927 he became a member of the Edmonton Art Club, and in 1931 was a founding member of the Alberta Society of Artists. That same year several of his paintings were exhibited at the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa). In 1934 Petley-Jones moved to London, England, and in 1939 held his first solo exhibition at the Matthiesen Gallery, in London. During the war, Petley-Jones served in the British navy. Following the war he moved between England and Canada several times. Llewellyn Petley-Jones died in 1986 in Richmond, England.
