Kensel Franklin was born in Au Cayes, Haiti, in 1945. He began painting at an early age and was fascinated with the voodoo religion in his community. He studied at the Academy des Beaux-Arts, in Port-au-Prince, under Geo Remoneau and Petion Savain. It is reported that Franklin died a violent death in 1978. Franklin's work gained recognition during his brief life, and was exhibited throughout Haiti and beyond. It can be found in the books Art is Kitsch, by Eva Pataki, and Haiti - Voodoo Kingdom to Modern Riviera, by John Allen Franciscus, as well as in the permanent collections of the Musee d'Art Haitian du College Saint Pierre (Port-au-Prince), the Waterloo Museum of Art (Iowa) and the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
