Ken Lum est un artiste multidisciplinaire, commissaire, professeur d’art et auteur canado-étatsunien d’ascendance chinoise qui s’intéresse aux questions d’identité, d’immigration et de langue et à la dimension politique de l’espace. Ayant obtenu sa maîtrise ès beaux-arts de la University of British Columbia en 1985, il se fait notamment connaître à la même époque par la série Portrait-Logo, dans laquelle il combine portraits, logos et texte de manière à créer une tension entre l’image et les mots. En 2002, il cofonde Yishu: Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art, première revue de langue anglaise à se consacrer à l’art chinois.

Lum participe à des expositions ou réalise des commandes d’art public sur tous les continents. On trouve ses œuvres dans de nombreuses collections en Amérique du Nord, en Asie et en Europe, y compris celles du Musée des beaux-arts de l’Ontario (Toronto), du Musée des beaux-arts du Canada (Ottawa), de la Tate Modern (Londres) et de M+ (Hong Kong). Il reçoit par ailleurs plusieurs distinctions au cours de sa carrière, dont une bourse Guggenheim pour les beaux-arts (1999), un doctorat honoris causa de la Simon Fraser University (2015), le prix Gershon-Iskowitz (2019), un Prix du Gouverneur général en arts visuels et en arts médiatiques (2020) et le Prix de photographie Banque Scotia (2023). Il est aussi fait officier de l’Ordre du Canada en 2017.

Ken Lum vit actuellement à Philadelphie, où il est professeur distingué Marilyn Jordan Taylor au Département des beaux-arts de la Stuart Weitzman School of Design, à la University of Pennsylvania. (J.D.)

Ken Lum is a Canadian-American multidisciplinary artist, curator, art professor, and writer of Chinese descent who examines questions of identity, immigration, language, and the political dimension of space. After receiving an MFA from the University of British Columbia in 1985, he soon became known for his Portrait Logo series, in which he combined portraits, logos, and text to create tension between images and words. In 2002, he co-founded Yishu: Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art, the first English-language magazine dedicated to the work of contemporary Chinese artists.

Lum has exhibited and produced public artworks on every continent. His work is also included in numerous collections in North America, Asia, and Europe, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), Tate Modern (London), and M+ (Hong Kong). He has received several distinctions over the course of his career, including a Guggenheim Fellowship (1999), an honorary doctorate from Simon Fraser University (2015), the Gershon Iskowitz Award (2019), the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts (2020), and the Scotiabank Photography Award (2023). In 2017, he was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Ken Lum currently lives in Philadelphia, where he is the Marilyn Jordan Taylor Presidential Professor in the Stuart Weitzman School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania.
