Notes:
Joseph Hartman is a Canadian photographer celebrated for his intimate, atmospheric landscapes of Georgian Bay. Born in Midland, Ontario, in 1950, Hartman’s connection to the region runs deep—shaped by summers spent on the Bay and later by his work with the Canadian Coast Guard, where he patrolled a 150-kilometre stretch of its northeastern shoreline.

His Georgian Bay series captures the austere beauty of this remote, often inaccessible landscape, reachable only by boat or floatplane. Working with a traditional 4x5 view camera and, more recently, drone technology, Hartman documents the rugged terrain and isolated communities scattered along the coast. His images explore the tension between human presence and the natural world, touching on themes of solitude, endurance, and time’s quiet erosion. Through his lens, Hartman offers a compelling meditation on the fragile relationship between people and the wilderness of Georgian Bay.

Consignor proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, with significant donations also being made to the Canadian Opera Company, the Glenbow Museum, the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, and the Pelee Island Bird Observatory.
